When I was looking after the grandchildren (see next post), I asked them if they wanted an Apple , yes they would. The boys wanted theirs peeled and in slices, while Alyssa wanted hers just peeled. I took a small one for her and started peeling. She informed me that she wanted the bigger one, which I knew she could not handle. " Hmmm, you know what, this one really is for you, has your name on it, see?" I made an "A" with the peel, she looked at it. She replied: "Well okay!"

Last night we were watching our grandchildren, Hudson, Evan and Allysa, while Ron took Lynne on a date. I made Dutch Pancakes for them, it always seems to be a treat for all our grandchildren. We just love them too, but I'll make them only when they come.

Allysa like to ask questions, which I readily answer.

I am growing some cuttings and added a few stones to it as you can tell from the above picture. Also to give it some color a small toy. Her question was: "Oma, why did you put a toy in there?" I told her that I want to make it look nice in there for the small fish I am going to buy and when it is really big, we'll have it for dinner!

Silence for a few seconds: "Growing it in there?"

While probably thinking are you out of your freak'n mind?

Yep, this Oma is just one of a kind!!

My Birthday

Last Tuesday Jan 31st was my Birthday, which started of with a call from Paul and Jennifer and the kids who sang the happy Birthday song. While they made the call, Nico, almost three, just left the room. The minute they started singing he ran back into the room with a big smile on his face, he thought they were singing for him! After explaining to him that it was NOT his Birthday, his smile turned into a big frown, hahaha!

Then at 11 Lynne came to pick us up, (they live 45 min away) to drive us all the way to Gatineau QC, to pick up Ron as well. They took us to this quaint French little place, actually the area has lots of small French restaurants. With the fresh snow covering the hilly streets it looked very romantic and inviting. I had the best soup I'v ever tasted. It was so very, very enjoyable. The only thing I did not like was the driving conditions, the roads were very slick. But Lynne brought us home again and she is a good driver. It is amazing though, that just across the river you are, as it were, being transported to a little town in Europe. We live in such a beautiful area.

Then as we came back to our apartment, we found in front of the door these beautiful flowers. The delivery person had left them there with a note attached from Yvonne. Who at that time was away at sea on a cruise. She must have ordered them before they left and the poor girl was already so busy and overwhelmed with finishing of her design projects and packing etc. Anyway, it sure made me feel loved that's for sure. Along with a few calls from friends and family in Holland, my day was wonderful.

By that I mean buy some flowers.

Actually, I try to have flowers on our dinning room table all the time.

Yes they cost a bit, but I'd just as soon skip eating out!

It was quite a day yesterday with the wind howling around the building.

Things were rattling on the roof (we are on the top floor) and

the bathroom vents made a noise, what a nice evening to stay indoors

with a laptop and watching a movie!

We start our Christmas Eve celebrations by feeding the kids first

and sent them off to the other room. This time they had Pizza!

Then we have a Cheese fondue and meatballs, rice etc, 'cause Jason can't eat cheese!

This Fondue pot is so old, (some 40 years) but we still use it(even though I have a modern one) just part of the nostalgia!

Ron apparently is not in a hurry his Blackberry has some more important stuff on it,

at least that is my guess! I think the picture below has Ted saying something to the effect

Guess what Ted got for Christmas?

There were so many presents and because of all the excitement, no more pictures were taken!

On Christmas day it snowed, thanks to all the people who were bellyaching wanting to have a White Christmas. We were therefore in a real pickle, since we had to drive all the way to Russell 50km. The roads were bad, Yvonne and Jason advised against us driving and they had to make quite a detour to pick us up.

Yvonne and Jason took overnight bags and an air-mattress, just in case they'd be forced to stay over night at Ron and Lynne's. (Ted and I were all ready planning on staying). Sure enough, snow kept on coming down, Jason decided no way was he going to drive all that way back. We all liked that idea, made the evening a bit longer with more eating and laughing! Also very thankful that Ron and Lynne have this massive house, and that they loved having us all.

The next morning we woke up to a five ***** breakfast. Holy smokes was that delicious. That Lynne is quite a hostess. Yvonne called her a "Mennonite Machine" (because of her parents background. Actually her Mom is quite an hostess/cook as well.

Thanks again Ron and Lynne for your hospitality.

I like to thank all of our children for all the great presents we received.

Ron took us home around noon. We sure had a wonderful time

Well, we went to the new IKEA here in Ottawa. It is enormous and the display of stock is something else. The restaurant seats 600 people. besides that there are couches and coffee tables all over the place, where you can have a coffee! The designers went all out. I guess that is IKEA for you! They also had very nice Christmas music going, which added to the atmosphere.

The store is about a five min drive from our Condo, as was the previous one. They built the new store on the same lot with parking galore.

It is great for Christmas shopping. Amazingly, it was not very busy, because everybody I talked to want to wait till the Opening rush is done with. Too many people are thinking that, hahaha!

I am loving this weather here in Ottawa, hard to believe not seeing snow at this time of the year, having lived in Winnipeg for so long.

Last week I put up the tree and for the rest I kept the decorating low key as opposed to previous years when we lived in Winnipeg. Jason used to say "Christmas threw up in our house!"

Ted and I can't believe how happy we are in this place. I feel so at home here in Ottawa.
Still believe the parking sucks! We have to go to the Endocrinology department, no no no, not the Criminology, hahaha! This is for a follow up regarding Ted's Diabetes. The specialist all have their offices near or in Hospitals. Just pull out the Visa card and don't look!!

This Friday I have some laser treatments to both my eyes. Since my Cataracts operation a few years ago, things did not work out too well.This is the second time. Yvonne has to drive me there and back! Bless her, she is so extremely busy with her work, which keeps coming in! But having her drive me is my only option.

In the meantime enjoy this Christmas time!

I may be famous for my Cinnamon Buns, but...I suck at making cookies, yes even from a mix. When they came out of the oven it looked as if I'd vomited my Oatmeal Porridge breakfast on the cookie sheet. It took all my strength to scrape them of. I guess, I'd better stick with store bought cookies!

I showed them to Ted, who just smiled and said: " At least you are pretty sweetheart!"

Any condition such as Diabetes impairs the function of the kidneys and will probably raise the Creatinine level in the blood. It is important to recognize whether the process leading to kidney dysfunction is longstanding or recent.

This is what our Nephrologist Dr Zimmerman told us last Friday. Apparently Ted has a reduced kidney function, about 30%. (as opposed to 100% normal)

It would have been easier for her to determine the seriousness had I brought the lab reports with me, those done in Winnipeg for the last few years. However, I had sent them already to our family doctor. (Dr Udoeyop) who also requested them.

Dr Zimmerman needs to know whether the Creatinine level increased (in Ted's case) over a long period or more recent. As soon as she receives those reports she'll study them and have a better idea how to go from here. Than I wonder how come they were not more on the ball in Winnipeg!

She mentioned that if the Creatinine level increased slowly it probably continues that pace. It cannot be reversed, only stabilized.

In the meantime "we just go with the flow". We can worry about it and that does not help one bit, we'd rather trust that the Lord will guide the specialist. She is a wonderful doctor, she took her time explaining everything to us.

I'll keep you posted! In the meantime, we do appreciate your prayers.

So you visit my blog and what do you find, nothing. It's simple, I have nothing to write. Or I find asking my self, who'd be interested in this.

Our lives are somewhat mundane. We get up, eat and go back to bed. No, not really, it's more exciting than that I suppose, hahaha!

The other day I mentioned to Ted, "my eyes are not very good and neither are my ears. It is such a good thing at least my brains are in good working order!" To which he replied: "Now sweetheart, that of course is a matter of opinion!"

I still do the stairs (down only), but today I managed to do nine floor up, I am kinda out of shape. Twice a week the Aquafit and than I swim a few laps afterwards. For the rest I don't do a heck of a lot.

I love to read on my Kindle. Since Yvonne gets to see many books and knows a few Publishers I get some good reads through them. I saw on Amazon that they have the new and improved "Touch pad Kindle". Wow, that sound great. It's coming out at the end of this month. You can pre-order. Problem is they do not mail to Canada. My last one was mailed to Paul and he got it to me.

So now I am going to watch "The big bang", I just love that show.

How necessary is it to soak, drain and rinse beans?

Many think the main reason to soak beans is to minimize gas producing music, you know what I mean! While it's true that soaking, draining and rinsing does help to remove the indigestible complex sugars from the outer coating of the beans, it's certainly not the primary reason to soak.

Probably the most important reason for soaking is that it allows shorter cooking times and that preserves the most nutrition's, so you get the benefits of all the proteins, vitamins and minerals in the beans.

Still not sure? Beans are dirty! Discard the dirty water!

Beans go through a series of threshing and sifting processes, but none of these steps include washing because any moisture could cause the beans to mold or start sprouting. So lets be clear, soaking the beans is the only way to clean them and remove the accumulated surface dirt, and nasty stuff like insect larva, rodent contamination, and any fertilizer or pesticide residues that might be present -- what the industry politely calls 'field dust' -- none of which you'd likely want to eat.

Sleepover

This weekend Aila came for a sleepover. That meant we had to go swimming in our pool, where she learned how to snorkel, which is quite an accomplishment, since never before she liked to get her face wet. She practiced with a vengeance because they are going on a cruise with snorkeling on the program.

Since they would all come for Sunday lunch we made "Oma's Cinnamon buns". She helped me from beginning to end and she was a delight and very dertermined to get it right!

So "queasily" she said

A new neighbour!

I met an other new neighbour. Just came out of the elevator, wet from my Aquafit class and she ran after me, introduced herself and asked to use our telephone. The movers were just about to bring her stuff. After introducing herself, I told her my name is Truus. "Oh", she said: "Are you Dutch?" She happened to be married to a Dutchman (but divorced). She was so delighted to have met us. I'll be seeing more of her I am sure!

But than afterwards I mentioned to Ted, we certainly were so fortunate to have Jason help us. He pretty well handled everything (even stocked our fridge!). Dealt with the movers took the calls as well. We could not have done it without him. Here is this elderly lady by herself. Just wondering, why she does not even have a cell phone! I guess, we are even more thankful for our children and their love for us!

We have been here for over a year and I meet a lot of ladies through my fitness class and in the corridors and the elevator, which actually takes only 35 sec (from the basement to the 21st floor) not enough time to have a conversation, hahaha!

We still love living here, it is quiet, (especially now they are finished with the repairs to all the cement balconies).

I do miss not able to have room for our children when they come. In Winnipeg we had the whole lower floor available. But life goes in stages and my, does it go fast! Young people with small children do not realize that as much. They have practically their whole life ahead of them.

I am beginning to wonder if I will be able to see our grandchildren getting married, that is a scary thought!

But then again, we are humanly speaking, closer to be with the Lord. What future do people have without that knowledge?

Early afternoon we went to the Mall. As we drove up I noticed all the Handicap parking spots were taken so that means, I commented to Ted, that there won't be any scooters inside, so we either get ours out of the trunk and put it together or you have to walk for a bit, which might do you good.

So walking he did, right past all the empty parking spots for expecting mothers. Ted commented, "she sure has a big belly", tracing the painted figure on the pavement with his cane.

"Hellooow", I said, "that is why the sign says, for expecting mothers!"

I still go to Aquafit class twice a week. I thoroughly love it. It gives me a good workout. It is amazing what you are able to do with your body in the water. Besides all that great stuff, I meet a lot of neighbour ladies.

I like to be way up front that way the instructor watches me and corrects me when I am not breathing or standing straight up etc., and I like that!

There is this one older sweet lady who likes to be close to me, I call her "Klingon". She tells me that she watches me, (I think she might be hard of hearing and can't hear the instructor, I am afraid to ask!)

I told the instructor about her wanting to copy me, but she also tends to get too close, which makes me nervous when we are splashing around.

Anyhow, this morning we were doing a certain routine, which involves a 360 turn. I took the turn too quick and sure enough "Klingon" followed me. The instructor started laughing and so did I, "Klingon" did not notice.

Yesterday was Lynne's Birthday. Today she and Ron are out on a date, dinner and a movie, while we are looking after our Grandchildren. We took them to McDonalds and right now they are glued to the TV, at least the boys are, Alyssa is keeping us company.

Some popcorn is always a treat and what else Alyssa finds in the special drawer, hahaha! Have to find another secret place in the kitchen, don't have too many left! An other problem, I forget my hiding places!!!

Anneka was here last weekend and asked for Smarties, I knew I had bought some.....now where were they? Leave it up to Anneka to discover the new "hiding place".

I am a curious kinda person. Since we are here in Ottawa, I see many spiders around. Yes even in our condo. Luckily, they don't scare me but somewhat gross me out. They like to sit on our big window (on the outside!!) Since we are 21 floors high I can't clean those windows. Therefore a good rain with an eastern wind is always welcome for this Dutch gal. I remember as a little girl not even ten having to wash the windows every week. Something like that sticks in your mind like a spiderweb, hahaha!

Many people think spiders are dangerous creatures that should be wiped away with a cloth, sucked up in the vacuum cleaner or smashed with a newspaper. That is not wise because spiders play a very important role in our Eco-system. They catch many annoying and harmful insects, are not destructive and are therefore useful creatures.

Saturday, Yvonne, the girls and I went to an Apple Orchard in Orleans. First of all, it was a perfect day for that and I have never done that ever (in an orchard that is). It was an experience that's for sure. You don't do it to get a bargain hahaha! We had a lot of fun though. The girls really got the hang of climbing those trees. Some were shaped so odd, reminded me of a tree we had in our back yard in Winnipeg. I kept on chopping branches off, (I went about it the wrong way though, that tree became a real disaster).

Back to apple picking: We all got a plastic bag and with some instructions were sent on our way!. I saw all these hundreds of apples lying around and felt bad taking them off of the tree. Yvonne kept saying: "Mom that is the whole idea - that you pick them!"

"Such a waste" I thought (remember, I am Dutch and went through a war!) Finally Yvonne said something very profound, hahaha! "Mom", she said: "They feed the fallen ones to the animals - horses love apples." Now that took away at least some of my guilt and I went merrily on my way, that is, picking apples off of the trees!

When the girls were much younger I got permission from our Winnipeg neighbour to pick crab apples from their tree. The girls and I went with buckets and I told them they could help me make applesauce. I took them through the whole process including putting it in containers, mark them and put them in the freezer. I dare say that Oma's apple sauce (according to them) is the best.

Now, I am not able to make too much since I don't have a large freezer in our apartment.

I got a new coffee grinder. The one I had is coming to his last legs. My dear husband suggested I get a better one, more updated. (I am too frugal) . Anyways it works great. So I am temporarily happy!

Beach Day!

Yesterday, Yvonne, Lynne and me took the kids to the beach behind our apartment (5 min away). It was a hot day (35c) and that for September. Unlike other schools our kids start school next Tuesday so it was not busy at the beach at all. It was a perfect day. The water is very shallow at the rivers edge and clear as can be! (Except for some minnows). needless to say, the kids had a blast and so did we.

When Lynne went to Winnipeg for a couple of days, her flight left rather early in the morning. She slept here and at 3am we got up and I drove her to the Airport. Yes, that early!

On my way home I even picked up a few items from the "24-hour" grocery store! Never done that before. All the customers I saw were men with quite a few things in their carts. I almost felt like asking why in the world they were not sleeping, but than again, what was I doing there? hahaha

What I really wanted to mention is that after I parked my car in our garage, I got in the elevator and it stopped on the first floor. In came two security guys in uniforms armed with a walkie talkie. I of course wanted to know what they were doing in our building. "Just patrolling M'am, we walk around all night seven days a week." "Holy smokes", I said, "no kidding, now I feel really safe." They got off on my floor and checked the stairwell and probably watched me go into my door!

I guess seeing the elevator go so early in the morning looked to them a bit suspicious. What goes on in our condo never ceases to amaze me. No wonder the maintenance fees are so high.

Since the beginning of May the balconies in our building are being restored. There are 12 "drops" of 20 balconies. With our "drop" being the last one done. That day has come and we were told to clear the balcony. This afternoon they barred our doors and we are sort of "jailed" in. I'll miss being out there! We expect to be in this situation for a couple of weeks.

The noise from all the drilling, in the cement, have been at times not that pleasant, especially the last two days. But they do take coffee and lunch breaks, what a relief that is. All the work of course is done with scaffolding, those guys jump over the edge of the balcony as if they are jumping a coffee table.

We could not go out today because we were also having a new in house fire alarm system installed. Today was reserved for our floor and we had to be here between 7am and 5pm. Well that has been done as I am writing this. The management of this building sure are on the ball. We certainly are very impressed!

Yes we are all smiles sitting in the train and looking forward to a wonderful time together!

It is actually so much more comfortable than a plane!

The reclining seats are great with lots of leg room.

Also a connection to the internet.

I'll take this anytime before steak, a small salad, some bread, I am happy!

Yvonne had bought floppy hats for the pool side,

very funny we thought!

"Lovely" in one word and below this so reminded me of my hometown.

We went inside, was very peaceful, I used to do that when I was a teenager.

Except this church was build around 1856.

(The house we lived in in Haarlem was older than that!)

Having breakfast, which was a buffet and it was absolutely fabulous!

Check this out a garden on the roof top and so was the pool BTW.

We walked through this garden late at night, all you heard was water running, so it was very peaceful. But we sure had to watch our steps because it was so dark!

One of the places in the Hotel you can sit and rest awhile, lovely!

It is time to go home again, what a bummer, hahaha!

The train station is across from the hotel.

What a beautiful station that is. I have never seen so many food courts, since the station is attached to various beautiful malls with shops we had never heard of! With more restaurants and food courts. Needless to say, we spent a few hours walking around there.

I also found the ladies more dressed up and very hip, very much like in Europe!

Staff in the stores were very accommodating and yes, they switched to English with a cute accent!

The Lord gave us beautiful weather, perfect in one word, it started raining while we were on our way back, but the minute we stepped out of the station the sun was shining up on us again!

How thankful I am to be able to experience such a wonderful two days.

Leaving for Montreal in a few minutes. We'll be going by train, therefore I have to park my car at the station. Yvonne will meet me there.

I made sure that Theo has everything he needs, even though it is only about 26 hrs that I am away, I am a bit concerned. He will be "apartment " bound that time with no one to talk to.

Anyway it is just so considered of Jason and Yvonne to give me this pleasure and am very excited seeing the big French city of Montreal in it's glory and Europe-en atmosphere.

So I buy butter, love it, I know, I know not healthy. But for that one piece of toast I eat?

Somebody told me some time ago, butter is the only way to go when it comes to frying mushrooms, he is right!

Sparingly used when frying an egg, is delicious!

I always divide the butter up in three small plastic containers and hate to see that residue on the paper go to waste. What do I do?

Well, since I am Dutch, I fold it neatly and put it in the freezer. next time I need to grease a cookie sheet, I am ready! Hahaha!

Cheese from Holland

When my sister was over from Holland in April, she had brought me some real "aged" Gouda cheese, which I absolutely looooovvvvve. It took a month or so after she had left for me to finish it. Nope, no sharing with anybody. (Besides it is rather strong, even Yvonne did not like it, I felt obliged to let her taste it!) When she and I were in Holland we'd go to the cheese store and sample before we'd buy a piece (that's what they do there, because of the many varieties and cheese makers).

About four weeks ago Bertie called me and asked if I'd received the cheese she'd mailed. I said: "You didn't, that'll cost you a fortune!" She had gone to the post office and asked the lady how much it would be. Now this was may be 400 gram worth 2.50 euro. The lady looked at Bertie with large eyes, translated into:"Are you crazy?" She weighed it and said: "Very expensive all the way to Canada that will cost 18.00 euro!" Bertie replied: "You know what, my sister is going to get this cheese, one way or an other!"

Bertie remembered she had a whole bunch of stamps at home, she took off with the lady staring after her. Bertie plastered the right amount of stamps all around that piece of cheese. Then took a trip back to the Post office on her bike. Bertie told me, you should have seen the look on her face! When she saw all those stamps, hahaha!

The cheese was in our mailbox the day Bertie called me. A good thing it was vacuumed packed, the fat was oozing out inside the wrapping, hahaha. But I am savoring it one small piece at the time. That should last me for a while.

How do I make my cheese last so long with out it walking around in the fridge from the mold?

I wrap the cheese in a paper towel and than in plastic wrap. When the paper gets greasy I replace it. Believe me the cheese will last. By the way, I thought of that my self!!

I do not like any meat but I love cheese and I like a variety, so it has to last and my way is the only way!

Since we are Dutch immigrants, been here some 50+ years, (in case you did not know!) Hagelslag the pure chocolate kind, is still a favorite in our family. Since it is available only in the Dutch store at $4.25 each, we try to bring it with us when visiting the Netherlands or when visitors come. In Holland you get it for $1.65, same brand same box!

Our grandchildren even love it, so I thought a little bit of background would be interesting. "hagelslag" comes in many varieties, hence the pictures!

Dutch hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles) was first invented in 1936 by Gerard de Vries for Venz,^[4] a Dutch company made popular by said treat. Hagelslag is used on bread. Most of the time butter is spread out so the hagelslag does not fall off. Several letters to Venz from a five-year-old boy, H. Bakker, asking for a chocolate bread topping, inspired and prompted de Vries' development of sprinkles. After much research and venture, de Vries and Venz created the first machine to produce the tiny cylindrical treats. They were named "Hagelslag" after their resemblance to a weather phenomenon prominent in the Netherlands, hail. Only hagelslag with a cacao percentage of more than 35 can bear the name chocolat hagelslag. If the percentage is under the 35%, it has to be called cacao fantasy hagelslag.

How psyllium husk can help with weight loss

Psyllium Husks can be purchased at any Bulk Barn (cheapest) or health food stores, Stir two heaping teaspoons in a glass of juice. Make sure you drink a full glass of water after that, very important. You could add to muffins as long as you get about two teaspoons per day (approx).

Having psyllium husk for weight loss is better than oat bran which has about five grams of fiber per third of a cup compared with the 71 grams per third of a cup that psyllium husk has to offer. The husk is the covering of the seeds grown on the plant Plantago psyllium and it grows mainly in the Middle East.

Those suffering from bowel conditions like constipation like diarrhea and constipation can benefit from the intake of psyllium husk as fiber absorbs water but is not digested. This results in bulkier but softer stool that easily passes out of the system.

Clinical studies have shown that psyllium husk is not only good for improving bowel conditions; it is also good for lowering blood cholesterol. A low fat diet works better in lowering blood cholesterol in conjunction with psyllium husk intake but even with a high fat diet, psyllium husk taken regularly reduces low density lipoproteins (”bad cholesterol”) by seven percent. Other studies have shown that regular intake of psyllium husk results more fat being passed in stool which is translated into fats.

Others have shown that psyllium husk also helps in lowering blood sugar counts. Psyllium husk fills you with fiber which reduces your appetite without causing harm to the nervous system. This is a much healthier approach than formulas like Herbalife which contain ephedra. Just a couple of capsules taken before a meal will help in making you feel full, hence making you eat less and reducing hunger cravings.

Psyllium husk is one of the most simplest and effective herbs for weight loss. It is also an effective antidote for many conditions related to the digestive tract like colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, dysentery and conditions of the genito-urinary tract. The oil in the embryo of the seed contains fifty percent linoleic acid that has been used as preventive measure for atherosclerosis.

Even conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease can be dealt with by the use of psyllium husk.

Weight watchers will greatly benefit from this herb as it barely has any side effects and it’s pretty good. Initial use may result in flatulence and bloating but these are minor problems as the body is adjusting to all that fiber. Those watching their carbohydrate intake might not be taking cereals and whole grains which are an important source of fiber. In these cases psyllium husk helps to fill in the gap and in a healthier way too.

As much as I love this Condo, I do not like certain smells that seem to drift in here and there.

This afternoon I mentioned this to our landlord. Since he also lives in a Condo he knew exactly what I was talking about! He introduced me to a remarkable item. He said “what you need is some of the lava rocks which Lee Valley Tools sell”. “Huh??” I thought. Rocks?

The Ministry of the Environment (MOE) has rated the City of Ottawa’s drinking water as one of the safest in the world.

(That it is the best water I can testify to that, because in Winnipeg I'd never, ever drank tap water, it was well, to say it mildly, bad.)

At the top of this picture taken from our Balcony, we can see a Water Purification Plant. I decided to find out a bit more about it

Yesterday as I walked by the beach I found it nearly deserted, and a large sign told me that swimming was unsafe, I wondered why!!(after all I worked for a Well Drilling company in Winnipeg for 12 years, where water testing was routinely done). Of course, curious as I am, I Googled it. Well it is because of the E-coli in the water. The water is being tested everyday. So, before you decide to go to the beach you can either Google or call a number in order to find out the water quality. Is that cool or what?

There are about five beaches in Ottawa, two of them around here.

I just came back from a walk and a beautiful walk it was. I usually walk towards the beach (lake) takes me about 45 min. there and back. I listen to my music and hum along, do some praying and thanking God!

The park area is just so beautiful and very busy with people of all walks of life, church groups, families having pic-nics or just lying around. There is a new restaurant with an outdoor cafe, music, dancing, young people just having a good time! Than the many play structures like the one on the picture. Parking lots were all filled up.

I decided I just have to take a few video's next time. This evening the view was so gorgeous with the evening sun hanging low over the water with people still having an evening swim.

For you Winnipeggers, it looks like City Park and Birdshill Park Beaches all rolled in one. Add a pier for fishing and lots of benches and picnic tables to watch the world go by. THAT is pretty well our backyard. An other bonus........ there are no mosquitoes!

Ottawa is known for it's many trails just for biking,(several hundred km) they are wide enough to pass (yellow line in the centre) and room for pedestrians. Ottawa also boasts over 1000 parks! They are all beautifully landscaped.

Ted and I took a trip across one of the Ottawa River Bridges into Quebec. We drove around some cute small towns and finally ended up in a large shopping area. We had lunch there and the servers could not speak English except for one girl who understood I wanted my soup warmed up, hilarious! I guess, we'd better learn to speak some French if we continue going across the river, hahaha!

One bright, beautiful Sunday morning, everyone in tiny Anytown got up early and went to the local church. Before the service started, the townspeople were sitting in their pews and talking about their lives, their families, and so on.

Suddenly, Satan appeared at the front of the church.

Everyone started screaming and running for the front entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate. Soon everyone had left the church except for an elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew, not moving, seemingly oblivious to the fact that God's ultimate enemy was in his presence.

Now, this confused Satan a bit, so he walked up to the man and said, "Hey! Don't you know who I am?"

The man replied, "Yep, sure do."

I was especially pleased they had invited Lynne to sing along with them and Ron to play the bass guitar.( Ron and Lynne usually go to a church close to where they live). I told them I had wanted to bring my camera, when Lynne quipped: "Then the Lord graciously intervened!"

I bought one and loving it! It took some time for me to learn all about it. Since I am the first one in our family to get one I could not ask for help! A few times I almost threw it from the balcony but the Condo has very strict rules about that.

Now I am a pro!!

I found out though in order for it to work right, I mean to be able to use some of the "for me important" features such as enlarging the font, you have to get the books from the kindle store. They do have quite a variety of free books which they wireless transfer in less that a minute, it is amazing actually!

The only thing I don't like is the "page turner" on both sides. It should have been up front or on one side only. Yes I can access my Blog, Facebook and Google as well, but the print is way too small and the curser a bit awkward. The Kindle is a Reader and for that I think it is great and I am happy with it!

Going up I shared the elevator with an older man in a bathrobe, a rolled up towel under his arm and damp hair.

Me: "Did you have a nice swim?"

Man: "Nope, just took a shower!" Because of the apparent puzzled look on my face he added, "that way I don't have to clean my bathroom, in the spa they do it for me! Done it for 30 years!"

Me: "Hmm, you're a smart one aren't you!"

By the look on his face he seemed very proud of him self!

Saturday was a beautiful sunny day. I was standing on our balcony looking in the distance where on a clear day as it was, I can see Quebec with some of the tall buildings and the mountains across the river. Ted had been wanting to go to a large store. I Googled and sure enough there is a huge shopping center with a large WalMart about 15km North.

It was a gorgeous drive, of course as soon as we crossed the bridge it is all French. Even in Walmart produce, dairy products, clothing etc. Like you are in a different country altogether. Mind you the cashier was bi-lingual and a good thing, hahaha! Also after living on the Prairies for 50 years I love to see the hills and mountains especially now everything is green!

This morning at 7am I had to drive Ted to the Hospital for his Colonoscopy. That meant only liquids for him yesterday and fun, fun, fun! That was his Fathers day gift. But we were told everything is okay. I had mine a month ago and that was good as well. Now we can wait for five years for the next one.

I still think that the parking situations in Ottawa around Clinics and Hospitals suck! I dropped Ted off and drove around for 15 min until I finally gave in and parked on a lot at $3.50 for 30 min. But because I was early I was able to get an "Early Bird" pass for $9.00. You know how it is you have to figure on two to three hours for an appointment in a place like a Hospital. That is taking advantage of sick people! Nope Ottawa you can learn something from Winnipeg! Can you imagine with all the doctor visits when we had cancer, I'd have to take a second job! Hahaha!

Okay, okay, let me complain a bit here! Get it of my chest!

Since we are living in this Condo, we have received notices that there has been some vandalism in the garage, such as puncturing tires etc. Last week some, believe it or not, graffiti on a few doors on two floors.

We have very tight security, from a doorman (years ago) to a more costly sophisticated intercom system with a camera. So it is very difficult to get in without a key, unless people are let in by residents as they enter because it is very awkward to refuse them entrance.

So last night I had to walk over to the drugstore and as I came out of the door a man wanted to get in. He told me the intercom did not work. I explained to him that I am not supposed to let anybody in. He understood that but told me that he would be my neighbor since he had purchased a Condo and he was visiting his son who lives on the 10th. I asked him what floor he was going to be on and some other small talk. He actually did not blame me and was glad to see residents are careful.

Anyway, this afternoon I stepped out of our apartment and at the same time our neighbors across from us stepped out of their door and who was with them? Yep, the intruder! Hey he said to Anne and George, (a real fun couple) she would not let me in last night! Oh good grief I thought! George said: "Can you blame her?" So we started kidding around, then the "intruder" said: "Look at my face!" "Never mind your face!" I said: "Look at mine, you have no idea what I am capable off! I only let you in because you did not carry a paint spray can!" To which he replied, : "Had one in my pocket!"

Actually George is in the (Condo) board of directors, at least that is a consolation! Last night when I told Ted I would not let a man in, he thought I had gone a bit of the deep end, hahaha!

Well, I want to be safe in this place especially going into the elevator for 20 some floors.

With the various reports on the outbreak of E-Coli (the most resent one found in bean-sprouts), I for one don't want to take any chances especially when a gallon bottle of vinegar is only 1.95 and Hydrogen Peroxide sells for 1.25. I don't even trust the so called triple washed produce.

Here is a timely article that has not been reprinted in the mass media. With the current scare of contaminated spinach, it seems that spinach processors and food distribution facilities, as well as consumers would find this of interest.

Susan S. Sumner, a food scientist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Blacksburg, Virginia), has found that misting fruits and vegetables with vinegar and three percent hydrogen peroxide (commonly sold in stores) kills attached microbes. Most people recognize that uncooked or undercooked meat can harbor disease-causing microbes, such as E. coli. Raw fruits and vegetables pose an equal and possibly greater threat than meat. Sumner says that vegetables are more likely than red meat to be contaminated by microbes (most of which are benign) and that the microbes adhere to vegetables more persistently. Elizabeth Ehrenfeld of IDEXX Labs (Westbrook, Maine) found that ten of 39 samples of fresh bean sprouts, bought from local groceries in 1998, harbored E. coli. The contamination probably occurred from contact with dirty hands during harvesting or distribution. Salmonella and Shigella have also been found on raw vegetables.

Studies performed in the 1990s showed that rinsing produce in water or even using a detergent does little to remove microbes. Sumner wanted to find a simple solution for restaurants and other establishments that provide raw salads. She used simple laundry spray bottles to mist produce with vinegar and then with hydrogen peroxide. The combination is highly effective and causes little effect on the food's taste. Which solution is applied first makes no difference, but using the two in combination is key. "If the acetic acid got rid of 100 organisms," Sumner told Science News Online, "the hydrogen peroxide would get rid of 10,000, and the two together would get rid of 100,000 . . . every [microbe] that drips off is killed." The combination also effectively cleans cutting boards and kitchen counters.

This past week we went to see our doctor just to get the result of our latest Lab Tests. All is well with me. My Colonoscopy turned out okay and the next one will be in five years. So that is good news. (It has been six years since I had cancer).

Ted will have his Colonoscopy in three weeks. For him it has been nine years since the liver cancer and 10 since his Colon Rectal cancer. We don't expect them to find anything either.

On the other hand it seems we are unable to get his sugar down. There is only so much pills can do.

The doctor wants him to start on Insulin. We are expecting a call from the Ontario Diabetic Organisation to teach him/me how to administer the injections and how much. (I hope he is able to do that himself, I am not that brave).

The doctor figures he will feel a lot better, less tired for one thing, that would be great! We have to do some more research on the net.

Yesterday I reported on this Pigeon who made it self at home on our balcony. Not the end of the story. This morning he/she or what ever it is, became a wake up alarm, can you believe that?

It was taking possession of the balcony again. Would not even move when I came out. I told it to go away. The poor bird probably figures I am bi-polar, since I was talking so sweetly to it yesterday, hahaha! Well, I didn't know how this would play it self out!

No more seeds, they ended up back on the balcony in a different form if you know what I mean.

It has been sitting and trotting around all day and actually looking inside out bedroom window, picking at it's reflection, actually very cute come to think of it!

This afternoon this Pigeon came to visit us.

It was about to leave until I started talking.

I gave it a few sunflower seeds, which were devoured,

but..... now we can't get rid of it!

I don't know what would happen if I'd really take possession

of our balcony though by stepping on to it!

Now it is a few hours later and Mr Visitor is still making him self at home. When I was trying to take possession of MY balcony he wanted to come in, can you believe that?

Finally I said through the screen: "Okay, party is over, just go already!

Guess what, he flew against the door and looked at me!

Then it started picking at my plant, hahaha!

Finally I thought I should get my broom and gently push it over the edge (after all, he can fly!)

There was no need for me to do that, he got the message! "The Party really was over!"

Our Anniversary

Today, May 20th is our 51st Wedding Anniversary.

Since everything is green and the trees have blossoms,

there are tulips, narcissus (and lets not forget the dandelions galore)

we thought it would be nice to drive around Ottawa's most beautiful scenic routes

and top it off with a lunch at the "Canal Ritz Restaurant" overlooking the Rideau Canal.

We sat outside and the weather was just perfect for that.

The food was great as well, we finished with one of their fabulous desserts (expensive!)

But what the heck, its our Anniversary!

We sat close by the water and huge fish were waiting for food.

Amazing, diners must have shared some leftovers in the past!

This evening we went to Baton Rouge restaurant, which we think is the best. The 20th is our Anniversary and last Sunday's Mothers day I was out of commission. We were with 11 of us, six adults and five grandkids. On special occasions such as this we do miss Paul and Jennifer and their four little ones. Especially since each cousin always has at least one they are really fond of and attracted to.

When last Thanksgiving weekend we were all together at Mont Tremblant for the weekend, Alyssa and Eliana, then four, were walking hand in hand all the time and at one time during supper Eliana said to Alyssa: "I love you more than meatloaf!" Now that is a lot of love if you happened to like meatloaf! Hahaha! (Which I don't) Anyways, as an Oma it is wonderful to see the little ones enjoying each other.

We have now nine Grandchildren with Anneka 11 years being the oldest and Wil our youngest (just a few weeks old) they are all close in age. The Lord has blessed us with a wonderful and a rather close knit family. Each one has a sensitivity to the needs of a sibling and there is no rivalry. What thankful and proud parents we are. How much love we receive not just from our own children but from their spouses as well.

Thank you Jason and Yvonne, Lynne and Ron, Jennifer and Paul. How much I love you words could not begin to express.

Last week we had my sister in law Willy and her daughter Nelly over for a few days. These pictures I took when Lynne and the children came over (Ron was out of town).

Parking 101

Yesterday? Not so good!

Okay we had a first appointment with a Neurologist who has a practice in the Civic Hospital. I knew beforehand parking might be a problem. Sure enough the parking lots were full and I had an option of either parking with a meter or on the street a km away, both are a problem since Ted cannot walk too far. Option, I dropped him off at the Hospital entrance hoping he'd find his way to our new Specialist in the Movement Clinic, second floor section "C" (whatever that means). Hoping it would not be too far!

In the meantime I set out to find a spot with a meter, great found one except it did not say how much I had to put in. I got a hold of a man and asked him if he knew. Since he was taller than me he was able to read some writing way on top of the meter. $3.00 for half an hour (lucky me, I had robbed my coin collection). I figured better put some more in while the man was looking on, $3.00 more, I was up to 50 min, an other loony, still 50 min. The man began to bang the meter, what a rip off we both declared. After $9.00 still 50 min. In the meantime I was getting worried about Ted. First things first, I rushed down the area into the Hospital all flustered and muttering: "Ottawa you suck!"

When I finally came to section "C" after a lot of walking and asking a few people, who could not care less, I arrived hoping I'd find Ted waiting very patiently in a chair. Except, get this, in a Movement Disorder Clinic, they had sent him downstairs to admitting. That is when I gave the lady behind the desk a piece of my mind, explaining he could not walk that far. She explained that when they scheduled our appointment, we should have been told that is what we needed to do first.

I finally found Ted, he had fallen, was very frustrated and ready to go home and my parking meter was running out! Luckily he was called in as soon as we were back in section "C"!

But I was able to stay about 10 min.while the internist asked a lot of questions. I never met the Neurologist who was surprised why I was not with Ted. (The internist explained my predicament) while I sat in our car for over an hour in one of the side streets.

Why in the world do they want you to pay so much for parking either at doctor's office, clinic and Hospitals. Okay Ottawa, in that area you suck!

Not much to report really. It was a bit of a let-down after my sister went back to Holland. We had planned her trip since October. She has called me three times already. She obviously had a good time here. But all good things come to an end, at least some things, but not how much we like it here in Ottawa!. The best move we ever made. I can't get enough of our view from the balcony especially now that the weather is so much better. The windows are open and we can hear the sounds of cars on the freeway. I am a city girl can't you tell?

I still do my stair walking, pffff just came back. I brought back some books to the library in the basement and took a few back with me. I still am amazed we have our own library!

Then there is my Aquafit class, how I love that. The instructor gives us such an amazing workout. Afterwards I usually swim back and forth for a while. Today mind you it got too busy. I realized because of Easter Monday (People have to wait until our class is done though!).

We had a quiet Easter since our kids went away for a well deserved weekend.

This week we have a couple of Doctor/Specialist appointments. It is amazing how that all came together for us. This week Theo will be seeing the neurologist for his Parkinson's. That is good timing since it tends to flare up lately. Why that is we don't know. Walking is getting more difficult for him. But otherwise he is happy and we are thankful for each others company!

Holland's Tulip fields

At first glance, it looks like a giant child armed with a box of crayons has been set loose upon the landscape. Vivid stripes of purple, yellow, red, pink, orange and green make up a glorious Technicolor patchwork. Yet far from being a child’s sketchbook, this is, in fact, the northern Netherlands in the middle of the tulip season. With more than 10,000 hectares devoted to the cultivation of these delicate flowers, the Dutch landscape in May is a kaleidoscope of giddy colors as the tulips burst into life. The bulbs were planted in late October and early November, and these colourful creations are now ready to be picked and sold as bunches of cut flowers in florists and supermarkets. More than three billion tulips are grown each year and two-thirds of the vibrant blooms are exported, mostly to the U.S. and Germany.

Their dazzling colors are thanks to the years in the 17th century when Tulip mania swept the globe and the most eye-catching specimens changed hands for a small fortune. But like a rainbow, this colourful landscape is a short-lived phenomenon. When the flowers are gone, the land will be cultivated for a rather more mundane crop of vegetables. The Netherlands produce more than nine million bulbs a year.
